Bore finish

The finishing process involves creating a surface with a defined roughness depth.

What is meant by surface finish?

Usually one determines the surface quality of the final product before the production of the component is started. This influences the material and the production process chosen for this part.

The quality of a surface is usually specified more precisely with two parameters. The center roughness value (Ra) and the averaged roughness depth (Rz). The ultimate goal of finishing is to make the surface structure finer or rougher. The latter is the case when more adhesion is desired. This can apply, for example, to lubricants that are supposed to "adhere" better to a rough surface. A special form of finishing is honing, which we discuss separately.

Which tools do I use for finishing bores?

Osborn micro-abrasive tube brushes are particularly suitable for finishing the surface in bores.
The abrasive bristle is usually silicon carbide, aluminum oxide, or diamond.

Depending on the defined roughness depth for the surface to be produced, there is a wide range of different grit sizes. The advantage of the abrasive bristle is that the bristle "works" on the workpiece both at the tip and on the side surfaces of the bristles. During machining, new abrasive material is constantly released, thus guaranteeing a very even sanding effect.

(Transverse) bores, O-ring recesses, but also nozzles, and hydraulic bores with small diameters can be machined in this way.

The brushes can be used in both wet and dry applications. In addition to choosing the right tool, the application parameters (direction of rotation, speed) are essential for achieving the desired surface quality. Our application engineers will advise you individually for your application.
